Tooling SEO tools vs AI search tools

SEO tools vs AI search tools in 2026.

The 30-second answer

SEO tools and AI search tools measure different things. SEO tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, Sistrix, Screaming Frog) track Google rankings, keywords, backlinks and technical issues. AI search tools (Profound, AIClicks, Otterly.AI, Peec, SE Visible) measure how often your brand gets cited inside generative answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. You need both. Google still drives roughly 88% of search traffic (Datos, Q2 2025) and Google sessions per user actually went up after ChatGPT adoption. The two stacks complement each other - they do not replace each other.

Why a rank tracker answers a different question

12%

of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appear in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. Perplexity is the outlier at closer to one in three.

Only 12% of AI Cited URLs Rank in Google's Top 10 for the Same Prompt, Ahrefs. Published 11 August 2025. Checked 19 August 2026.

How it was measured: 15,000 prompts. This is 2025 data and has not been re-run, so treat it as directional rather than current.

37.9%

of pages cited in Google AI Overviews also rank in the top 10 for that query.

Update: 38% of AI Overview Citations Pull From The Top 10, Ahrefs, Louise Linehan. Published 2 March 2026. Checked 19 August 2026.

How it was measured: 863,000 keyword SERPs and 4 million AI Overview URLs. Ahrefs measures the top 10 as blocks, counting ads, featured snippets and video packs as separate blocks.

76.1%

was the same measurement in July 2025, so the overlap between ranking and being cited has roughly halved in eight months.

76% of AI Overview Citations Pull From the Top 10, Ahrefs. Published 21 July 2025. Checked 19 August 2026.

How it was measured: 1.9 million citations from 1 million AI Overviews. Ahrefs notes it improved its parsing between this study and the 2026 update, so part of the change may be measurement rather than behaviour.

What each category is actually built for

The "SEO is dead, switch to AI" framing is wrong. The "AI search is just SEO" framing is also wrong. They are parallel layers and the tooling reflects that.

// traditional SEO tools

Track ranking on Google

Ahrefs Semrush Screaming Frog Google Bing

Built around keyword position tracking, backlink graphs, technical crawl audits, on-page optimisation, SERP features and content gap analysis. The data foundation is large-scale crawling of Google and Bing results.

  • Keyword volumes, difficulty, intent
  • Backlink discovery and toxicity
  • Technical crawls (404s, redirects, indexability)
  • SERP feature tracking (PAA, featured snippets)
  • Competitor keyword gap
// AI search tools

Track citations in AI answers

ChatGPT Claude Perplexity Gemini Copilot Grok DeepSeek

Built around prompt sampling. The tool sends a set of prompts to each AI engine on a schedule, parses the answer, and records whether your brand was mentioned, cited as a source, or recommended over a competitor.

  • Brand mention frequency per engine
  • Citation source attribution (which page got cited)
  • Share of voice vs named competitors
  • Sentiment (positive, neutral, negative)
  • Prompt discovery (what users ask AI)

Why you cannot use one to do the other's job

An SEO tool cannot tell you whether ChatGPT recommended you over a competitor when someone asked which CRM to buy. A backlink crawl never reaches inside a generated answer. The reverse holds: an AI citation tracker has no opinion on whether your meta description is too long or your crawl budget is being wasted on faceted URLs.

The big SEO suites have started bolting on AI features. Ahrefs Brand Radar AI (add-on from $199/mo), Semrush Enterprise AIO, SE Ranking AI Search add-on. These are useful for casual visibility checks but none of them replaces a tracker built from the ground up to sample engines continuously. Ahrefs has published the strongest AI search research in the market (the 863K SERP, 1.9M citation AI Overview study and the 1.4M ChatGPT prompt Reddit analysis) - the research is excellent, the per-domain continuous tracking is still better handled elsewhere.

The numbers behind "you need both"

The honest position is the one MarTech and Semrush are both pushing now: search is fragmenting, not migrating. Three data points worth knowing if anyone tries to sell you a pure-AI or pure-SEO position:

So the volume is still on Google. The conversion premium is on AI. Tracking one without the other means you optimise blind on the channel you ignore.

What a sensible stack actually looks like

Three tiers I see settling out in UK B2B teams in 2026.

Solo / small
Ahrefs Starter for keyword and ranking baseline, Mangools AI Search Grader (free) for ad-hoc AI visibility checks, Screaming Frog (free up to 500 URLs) for technical crawls. Add the free AI Search Visibility tool on this site for one-off pulse checks.~$29/mo, plus free tiers
Mid-market
Ahrefs Lite or Semrush Pro as primary SEO suite, AIClicks or Otterly.AI as primary AI citation tracker, Screaming Frog licence for the crawler.~$220-$400/mo total
Enterprise
Ahrefs Standard or Semrush Guru for SEO operations, Profound Growth or SE Visible Plus for AI citation tracking, Screaming Frog licence, plus an enterprise rank tracker (Advanced Web Ranking) if you operate at scale.~$900-$2,000/mo total

Honest framing: if your AI traffic share is still under 5% of organic sessions, paying $399/mo for Profound is probably premature. Start with a free tracker (Mangools or the tool on this site), confirm whether AI is actually sending you traffic that converts, then upgrade. The trap right now is paying enterprise AI tracker prices for traffic that is not yet there.

What to ignore

  • Tools claiming to "optimise for ChatGPT" via static rules. The engines change weekly. Anything sold as a one-time fix is selling false certainty.
  • API-only AI visibility simulations. Useful for engineers, lossy for non-engineers. Real engine responses (which is what Profound, AIClicks, SE Visible all do) beat API approximations.
  • "All-in-one" platforms doing both badly. A bolted-on AI feature inside an SEO suite is not the same as a purpose-built tracker. Use the suite for what it is good at, pay the tracker for what it is good at.

Primary sources

// questions I get

More on the two categories.

What is the difference between SEO tools and AI search tools?

SEO tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, Sistrix) track Google rankings, keywords, backlinks and technical issues. AI search tools (Profound, AIClicks, Otterly, Peec) track whether your brand is mentioned or cited inside answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. The two stacks measure different outcomes: one measures position in the ten blue links, the other measures share of the generative answer. Most teams need one of each.

Do I still need traditional SEO tools in 2026?

Yes. Google still commands roughly 88-89% of all search traffic (Datos State of Search Q2 2025). AI usage is growing on top of, not instead of, Google. Semrush data shows Google sessions per user actually went up after ChatGPT adoption (10.5 to 12.6 per week). Traditional SEO tools cover the channel that still drives the majority of clicks; AI search tools cover the new channel that drives a smaller, higher-intent stream.

Can a regular SEO tool replace an AI search tool?

Not yet. Ahrefs Brand Radar AI and Semrush Enterprise AIO both add AI visibility features to their SEO suites, but neither is purpose-built for continuous per-prompt citation tracking across every engine. A dedicated AI citation tracker (Profound, AIClicks, Otterly, Peec, SE Visible) samples real engine responses on schedule and gives you share-of-voice, sentiment and source attribution that a bolt-on feature does not.

Which AI search tool is best for a UK team in 2026?

Depends on size. Solo or small in-house: Mangools AI Search Grader (free tier) or AIClicks ($59/mo). Mid-market agency or in-house team: AIClicks, Otterly.AI, or Peec AI ($59-$234/mo). Enterprise with multiple brands and regions: Profound ($399-custom) or SE Visible + SE Ranking ($189-$519/mo). All five sample real engine responses rather than relying on API simulations.

How much should I budget for a combined SEO + AI search stack?

Realistic floor: ~$100/mo. Workable mid-market stack: $300-$500/mo. Enterprise stack: $1,000-$3,000/mo. Small team: Ahrefs Starter ($29) + Mangools AI Search Watcher free tier. Mid-market: Ahrefs Lite or Semrush Pro ($129-$140) + AIClicks ($59) + Screaming Frog (£199/yr). Enterprise: Ahrefs Standard or Semrush Guru ($249) + Profound Growth ($399) + Screaming Frog licence.

Are free AI search visibility tools good enough?

For a one-off baseline check, yes. Mangools AI Search Grader, the AI Search Visibility tool on this site, and Otterly free tier all return useful first-look data. For continuous tracking, sentiment monitoring and competitor share-of-voice you need a paid tracker. Free tools are for the audit; paid tools are for the operating cadence.
