- Added the UK zero-click rate and Pew Research's measurement that 1% of visits to a page with an AI summary produce a click on a cited source. Both explain why this channel reports small numbers.
- Added Seer Interactive's 2026 finding that click-through partly recovered in early 2026, against their own forecast.
"GA4 AI Assistant" is actually two different things.
The 30-second answer
The phrase means two separate Google Analytics 4 features that happen to share a name. The AI Assistant channel group is a new default channel Google rolled out on 13 May 2026 to bucket referral traffic from ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude into one row. Analytics Advisor is an in-product Gemini chatbot, in beta, that answers questions about your own property in plain English. Most marketers searching this phrase mean the channel. The channel is a useful floor-level indicator for GEO reporting but undercounts the real AI influence because many AI surfaces strip the referrer header.
1. The channel
Default channel groupAI Assistant in Default Channel Group reports.
Buckets referral traffic from recognised AI chatbots (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude named publicly). Automatic, no setup, no historical backfill. Announced 13 May 2026.
2. The chatbot
Analytics Advisor (Beta)Advisor icon in the top-right of any GA4 property.
A Gemini-powered conversational assistant inside the GA4 UI. Ask questions about your data; get answers, charts, report links. Announced May 2025 at Google Marketing Live; still in beta.
What the channel is measuring, and what it cannot see
of UK Google searches end without a click on anything, the highest rate of the six countries measured and above the United States at 68.0%.
How it was measured: Similarweb mobile and desktop clickstream panel, January to April 2026. Zero-click means no click to anywhere, including to Google's own properties and to paid results. Germany was lowest at 62.1%.
of visits to a page carrying an AI summary resulted in a click on a source cited inside that summary.
How it was measured: Same 900-person US panel, March 2025. This is the figure that matters most for anyone selling AI citation as a traffic channel.
is what click-through did in early 2026, against every forecast. Organic click-through on queries showing an AI Overview rose from a floor of 1.3% in December 2025 to 2.4% in February 2026.
How it was measured: 53 brands, 5.47 million tracked queries, 2.43 billion organic impressions and 296.9 million paid impressions, January 2025 to February 2026. Wider than the earlier studies, which covered informational queries only. Seer's own regression model had forecast continued decline and the actuals beat it in both January and February. One dataset and one agency's client base, so treat it as a signal to watch rather than a settled reversal.
The 60-second technical version
On 13 May 2026 Google added "AI Assistant" as a default channel group in GA4. When the referrer header on an incoming session matches one of Google's recognised AI assistant referrers, GA4 automatically assigns three dimension values:
| Dimension | Auto-assigned value |
|---|---|
| Medium | ai-assistant |
| Channel group | AI Assistant |
| Campaign | (ai-assistant) |
The session then shows in the AI Assistant row of any standard channel report. The rollout is gradual, does not apply to historical data, and requires no configuration. Search Engine Journal and Search Engine Land covered the launch the day after; Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable captured the dimension triplet from Google's own changelog.
Which AI chatbots count
Google has only publicly named three in the help centre entry: ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. The full recognised-referrer list has not been published.
Useful context: in August 2025 Google published a separate custom-channel regex workaround for the same problem. That guidance named five platforms (ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Perplexity). The new default likely covers at least those five, but Copilot and Perplexity inclusion is not confirmed in the May 2026 help centre entry. If you need certainty for a specific source, the custom regex still works alongside the new default.
What the channel does not catch
Critical caveat: the AI Assistant channel is referrer-based. Many AI surfaces strip the referrer (mobile apps, in-app browsers, no-referrer policies, copy-paste of the URL). Those sessions land in Direct, not AI Assistant. The channel number is a floor, not a ceiling.
- AI Overview citations that lead to a later branded search rather than a direct click
- Dark-social AI mentions (someone screenshots an AI answer into Slack or LinkedIn)
- Agentic browser sessions where the agent reads your page but the user never visits
- Any AI surface that strips the referrer header (most mobile in-app browsers do)
- Apple Intelligence and Siri traffic (no public referrer convention)
Last year Google had to fix a separate bug where AI Mode search traffic was being reported as Direct after a noreferrer code was stripping headers, so the referrer-based measurement model has form for going wrong silently.
What to do if you already had a custom AI channel
If you (or your previous agency) built a custom channel group using the August 2025 regex guidance, the new default may overlap with your rules. Two things to check:
- Ordering. Default channel groups evaluate in a defined order. Your custom channel will not automatically defer to the new default. Decide which one you want to be the canonical source for board reporting and switch the other off.
- Coverage delta. Your custom regex may catch platforms Google has not yet added to the recognised referrer list. Keep the regex as a comparison check for a few months to see whether the default is missing platforms you care about.
Analytics Advisor: the other "AI Assistant"
The phrase "GA4 AI Assistant" also gets used for a completely different feature: Analytics Advisor. This is the in-product conversational chatbot, powered by Gemini, that lets you ask plain-English questions about your own GA4 property and get answers, visualisations and links to relevant reports. It is in beta. Different feature, similar name, same product.
Quick distinguishing rules:
- Where you find it. Channel = Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition. Advisor = the Advisor icon in the top right corner of any GA4 property, or "Ask Analytics Advisor" inside the GA4 search box.
- What it does. Channel = measurement (it counts traffic from AI chatbots). Advisor = interaction (it answers your questions about your data).
- What powers it. Channel = referrer-pattern matching. Advisor = Gemini models running on your property's data.
- Availability. Channel = rolling out to all properties automatically. Advisor = beta, eligible properties only, English language only.
How I use the channel in real GEO reporting
Three honest uses:
- Trend monitoring. Is AI Assistant traffic growing month-over-month? If yes, your GEO work is producing measurable clicks, even if the absolute number is small. Direction matters more than level here.
- Cross-reference with a citation tracker. If your tracker (Profound, AIClicks, Otterly) shows citation growth on ChatGPT but the channel shows no ChatGPT-referrer growth, the citations are happening but not driving clicks. That gap is the actual signal.
- Per-source split. Inside the AI Assistant channel, the underlying source dimension still shows which referrer drove the session. Useful when you want to see whether ChatGPT or Gemini is the one moving for you.
What not to use it for
- Absolute revenue attribution. Too partial. Referrer stripping is not random; some platforms strip more than others.
- Cross-platform comparison without context. Engines that strip referrer will look artificially low even if they send real traffic.
- Quarterly board reporting as the only AI metric. Pair it with a citation tracker, branded-search trend, and a sanity check on Direct.
Honest framing: the AI Assistant channel is a useful piece of evidence, not a measurement system on its own. If a client asks me "how much AI traffic did we get this month", I do not just read off the channel number. I read it alongside the citation tracker, the Direct trend, and any branded-search lift. The channel gives you one data point. Treat it as a thermometer, not a balance sheet.

More on GA4 AI Assistant.
What is GA4 AI Assistant?
The phrase covers two separate Google Analytics features that share the name. The AI Assistant channel group is a new default channel Google added on 13 May 2026 to bucket referral traffic from chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. Analytics Advisor is an in-product Gemini-powered chatbot that lets you ask questions about your own Analytics property in plain English. Most marketers asking this question mean the channel. Most product managers asking it mean Advisor.
When did Google add the AI Assistant channel?
Google announced the AI Assistant default channel group on 13 May 2026 in the Google Analytics changelog. The channel rolls out gradually across properties, does not apply retroactively to historical data, and requires no setup. Sessions from recognised AI chatbot referrers get medium = ai-assistant, channel group = AI Assistant, and campaign = (ai-assistant).
Which AI chatbots count as AI Assistant traffic?
Google has only named three publicly: ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. The full recognised-referrer list is not published. The custom channel group regex Google published in August 2025 covered five (ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Perplexity), so the new default likely covers at least those, but Copilot and Perplexity inclusion is not confirmed.
Will GA4 AI Assistant catch all my AI-influenced traffic?
No. The channel is referrer-based. Any AI session that arrives without a referrer header (mobile in-app browsers, copy-paste of the URL, the iOS no-referrer policy, Apple Intelligence, Siri) lands in Direct instead. AI Overview citations that lead to a later branded search are not captured either. Treat the AI Assistant number as a floor, not a ceiling.
What is Analytics Advisor and how is it different?
Analytics Advisor is a separate feature: an agentic conversational chatbot built into the GA4 interface, powered by Gemini. It is in beta. You click the Advisor icon in the top right of any GA4 property and ask questions like "why did revenue drop on 1 August" or "show me total purchases from organic last week". Advisor returns answers, charts and report links. It only works on properties with English as the selected language and processes data at property level only.
Do I need to set either of these up?
The channel group is automatic. Nothing to configure. If you previously built a custom channel group with regex to track AI traffic, the new default may overlap with it; review your custom rules so you do not double-count. Analytics Advisor is also automatic for eligible properties, accessed via the icon in the top-right of GA4.
How should I use this for GEO reporting?
Use the channel as one leading indicator alongside a citation tracker and branded-search trend lines. Trend matters more than absolute count because the referrer-based measurement is partial. If the channel reads zero, either your AI presence is genuinely thin or AI-mediated traffic is being miscounted as Direct.
