Google AI Mode Conversational Google search

AI Mode rolled out in the UK on 28 July 2025. UK competitors are still catching up.

Google AI Mode is the conversational search experience powered by Gemini. The user asks a multi-step question, Google fans it out into related sub-queries, and composes a synthesised answer with citations. Google opened AI Mode to UK users on 28 July 2025, several months after the US broad launch at Google I/O in May 2025. Most UK competitors have not yet adjusted their content strategy. The brands moving now will be the ones cited as the surface matures.

UK market note: AI Mode has been live in the UK since 28 July 2025, but most UK content is still written for classic search snippets. Brands that publish AI Mode-shaped content now, with broad topic coverage, structured sub-questions and visible evidence, are building citation eligibility before the rest of the market catches up.

The 30-second answer: AI Mode rewards content depth and breadth. Pages that cover a topic thoroughly with structured sub-questions can be cited across multiple fan-out rounds. Strong Google E-E-A-T, Google-Extended access and content built around question-and-answer architecture are the three levers.

May 2026 update: Google says its newer AI Search updates are designed to surface relevant websites, deeper insights and original content. For SEO, that means AI Mode pages need primary-source evidence, named expert analysis, useful internal links and content sections that answer the sub-questions behind the original prompt.

// 01 - how AI Mode sources

What AI Mode does behind a conversational query.

// 01 - fan-out

Query fan-out

AI Mode breaks the main question into related sub-questions and runs searches across those angles. Content that covers a topic in depth, with the parent question and related sub-questions on the same page, has more chances to be selected across the fan-out.

// 02 - synthesis

Answer composition

Once sources are gathered, Gemini composes a synthesised answer. Pages with clear, quotable answer blocks survive the synthesis. Pages where the answer is buried get filtered out.

// 03 - follow-up

Conversational follow-up

AI Mode supports iterative questions in one session. Brands cited in the first answer often get cited again in follow-ups if the content covers the broader topic. Single-question pages do not benefit from follow-up coverage.

// 04 - extraction

Structured extraction

Schema, FAQ markup, clear headings and structured tables give AI Mode a map. The map only works when it points to visible answers, cited numbers and clear examples in the page copy.

// 05 - primary

Primary source over secondary interpreter

Google's May 2026 AI Search update puts more emphasis on original content and deeper web exploration. For UK brands the practical move is publishing the original data, methodology and named expert behind the work, not rewriting someone else's findings.

// 06 - multimodal

Multimodal-ready content

AI Mode is multimodal - it can read images, video transcripts and structured data alongside text. Pages with descriptive alt text, transcripts on embedded video, captioned diagrams and image schema get pulled into multimodal answers that text-only competitors miss. Especially relevant for product-discovery, how-to and visual-comparison queries.

// 02 - why most sites miss AI Mode

Where AI Mode visibility usually fails.

// 01 - narrow

Pages too narrow for fan-out

The page answers the head query only. Fan-out sub-questions go to competitors who covered the broader topic on the same page. Topic depth in one URL beats one URL per question.

// 02 - blocked

Google-Extended blocked

The site opted out of Google AI without realising AI Mode citation could disappear. Easy to test, often missed.

// 03 - no schema

Missing FAQ + Article schema

The page has the right answers but no structured data, or the schema does not match the visible text. AI Mode needs both the answer and a reliable map to it.

// 04 - SGE legacy

Content optimised for old SGE patterns

Some sites built content around early SGE (Search Generative Experience) guidance that has since shifted. AI Mode has its own dynamics. Content needs a refresh against current AI Mode behaviour.

// 03 - what I do

What survives the AI Mode fan-out.

1. Topic depth for fan-out coverage

Restructure key pages to cover the parent topic AND related sub-questions on the same URL. The fan-out then pulls multiple citations from one page rather than skipping you.

2. Google-Extended verified open

Confirm Google-Extended can crawl, that no Cloudflare or security rule is blocking the AI training surface.

3. FAQ + Article schema layer

Every key page gets FAQ schema for the questions answered and Article schema for the parent topic. The structural map AI Mode reads to compose synthesised answers.

4. AI Mode sampling and tracking

Sample your priority queries, log which brands appear, which sub-questions surface your content, and where the gaps are. Track AI Mode separately from AI Overviews because the citation sets differ.

5. Primary-source positioning

Publish the original data, methodology and named expert behind each piece. Original cohort data, internal benchmarks, named expert commentary and useful diagrams give AI Mode something specific to cite.

// 04 - questions I get

What clients ask about AI Mode.

What is Google AI Mode and how does it differ from AI Overviews?

AI Mode is a separate conversational search experience inside Google. The user enters a multi-step query and Google fans it out into sub-questions, then composes a synthesised answer. AI Overviews are the inline answers that appear above traditional search results. Same Gemini backend, different surface and different ranking dynamics.

How does query fan-out affect content strategy?

AI Mode breaks the main question into related sub-queries and pulls sources for each. Content that covers a topic thoroughly with internal sub-headings and related questions is more likely to be cited across multiple fan-out results than thin pages that only answer the single question.

Is AI Mode available in the UK yet?

Yes. Google opened AI Mode to UK users on 28 July 2025, several months after the broad US launch at Google I/O in May 2025. UK competitors are still adjusting because AI Mode rewards broader fan-out coverage than classic search.

Does AI Mode use the same ranking signals as traditional Google?

Significant overlap, important differences. E-E-A-T still matters. Schema still matters. The added factors are content breadth for query fan-out, extractable structure for answer composition, and Google-Extended access for the Gemini layer.

How do I measure if my content shows up in AI Mode?

Search Console does not yet give a clean AI Mode citation report. The practical method is query sampling: run the same priority prompts, log cited URLs, record brand mentions, and compare against AI Overviews separately because the citation sets can differ.

What changed for AI Mode SEO in May 2026?

Google announced AI Search updates focused on deeper links, original content and source exploration. That makes primary-source content, original analysis, cited examples and clear internal paths more valuable than generic summary pages.
